3 puppies up for adoption

THREE puppies found in Marpi are available for adoption. Their adoptive owner, Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation pediatrician Sarah Bergman Lewis, and her family are going back to Seattle next week.

Anya and Noah took care of the puppies for three weeks.

With the help of Boonie Flight Project co-founder Lauren Cabrera of Guam, they are looking for a “forever home” for the puppies.

“We know that there are so many dogs on Saipan…but we think that these three puppies are special,” said Steve Lewis, Dr. Sarah’s husband.

A few weeks back, Sarah said when she saw the mother dog with three puppies on the road to Marianas Trekking, she instantly felt a deep sense of care and decided to adopt them.

“Many people had seen this family…on the road trying to survive in the weeks before we took them home. We are grateful for the interest in these dogs, and excited to see how the community can show up for this brave mom and her family in the last step of their recovery: finding homes,” Sarah said.

She is a mother of two — Noah, 10 years old, and Anya, 12 years old — and couldn’t just walk away from the homeless puppies and their mother.

With the help of Cabrera, the Saipan Mayor’s Office Dog Control Program and Saipan Cares, Dr. Sarah and her family were able to treat the dogs who had mange, parasites, fleas and ticks.

After the treatment, Sarah named the mother dog Sequoia and rehabilitated her and her puppies out of the Lewis’s apartment in Sadog Tasi.

“My children and I did our best to nurse them and took care of them until they are in good shape,” she said.

The family chose Chamorro names for the girl puppies: Niyok, or coconut, for the biggest one; Noni, in the spirit of the healing fruit as her coat needed the most care; and Nunu, the runt of the litter, after the mighty Banyan tree.

The Lewis family made sure that the dogs have gained weight, grown fur and are now playful, healthy and cuddly.
