62 pounds Barracuda caught in the Northern Reefs

Sabo Ulechong, a.k.a “Buik er a Tuiich”, caught a 62 pound barracuda yesterday in an area of the Northern Reefs known as “Bkul a Komud.” He hooked the fish using a 60 lbs. tested braided hand line.

“The fish was tough. I had to fight it for about 45 minutes,” said Ulechong, “I had to change tactics and go after it with my boat. I think it knocked 10 horsepower off of my 40 hp engine. The thing was strong.”

Ulechong’s boat, Lady Tuiich, a 16-footer custom-made open boat with a 40 hp Yamaha engine, is reputed to be one of fastest boats of its size. Further, it is said to have been blessed with the most of the fishermen’s luck.

“Lady Tuiich and I nailed the barracuda just as we have always done since I first set her in water,” Ulechong said. “ We will likely set a real record soon.”

The barracuda, measured at 4 ft 6 inches long, according to Ulechong was divided amongst relatives in Koror.

“A fisherman must always share his catch,” Ulechong said, “ I shared with many with just one, can imagine what I’d share if I was really serious about fishing?

Ulechong, with luck on his side, is anticipating to join the next Etpison Cup. According to him, “it not lures, lines, or baits that catch fish, it is the man on the boat!”
