KOROR (Palau Horizon) – THIRTY EIGHT 8th Graders from Maris Stella School who will be graduating on Friday decidedleave a legacy by planting fruit trees in front of their school on Monday.
Instead of donating air conditioning systems, the 8th Graders decided it will be better to plant six Kelel a charm trees which their parents got all the way from Babeldaob as a token of appreciation for their school.
“It’s some sort of a legacy for them,” said Maris Stella School Principal Felix Okabe. “In fifteen years, these trees will grow big. Just like the ones that were planted by previous students 30 years ago.”
The tree planting was supposed to be an activity for Earth Day, but the school decided to wait for the children’s Graduation Day.
“It’s also our way of keeping Koror cooler,” said Okabe. “We want to send a message to all schools to start planting trees instead of flowering plants, and help the environment in the process.”
