THE Marianas Institute of Filipino Certified Public Accountants and Accountants or MIFICPA recently conducted a training session on essential Microsoft Excel skills for accountants.
Speaking to the roughly 50 training participants — some of whom were not accountants — was Certified Fraud Examiner Elijah Cabauatan.
Participants learned various Excel formulas, aimed at giving more value to accounting reports through data analysis and data management.
In past years, MIFICPA offered an advanced Microsoft Excel seminar. Garnering vast interest from its membership, the organization sought to hold a similar event this year.
“MIFICPA received interest from some members for an advanced Excel seminar that would help make their daily tasks in accounting work or office work easier and more accurate, especially when working with a large set of data,” said MIFICPA President Marvin Buston.
The training discussed information on data value chain, analysis, and management.
The data value chain is comprised of data, information, insights, and imperatives.
Data analysis is defined in the training as “the practice of working with data to glean useful information, which can then be used to make informed decisions.” This includes the application of statistics and computer science to bring together and review multiple datasets.
Data management takes an in-depth look at data extraction, manipulation, and visualization.
Data extraction is the process of collecting or retrieving disparate types of data from a variety of sources, many of which may be poorly organized or completely unstructured. Data is consolidated, processed, and refined so that it can be stored in a centralized location in order to be transformed.
Data visualization is the graphical representation of information and data, essential to analyze massive amounts of information and make data-driven decisions.
Some examples of visualizing data include charts, tables, graphs, geospatial, infographic, and dashboards.
This training, which cost $10 per participant, was conducted from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6 at Mt. Carmel Social Hall, and included refreshments and training completion certificates.
