HAGÅTÑA (Press Release) — Prutehi Guåhan encourages residents in Guam and throughout the Mariånas to register for their second community comment workshop regarding deep sea mining in the Mariånas.
Prutehi’s second comment workshop with Earthjustice will expand upon the previous session by leading a discussion on unprincipled claims of the financial benefits of deep sea mining efforts, a review of international law, and exploring insights from Earthjustice’s comment for Guam.
A brief recap of the first workshop will also be provided to participants who were unable to attend previously.
The workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 6, at 12 p.m. CHST and will be facilitated by experts and colleagues from Earthjustice, a non-profit public interest law firm based in San Francisco with regional offices throughout the U.S. This workshop is free and space is limited. Those interested can register at https://tinyurl.com/nodsm2/.
The panel includes:
• Harley Broyles, Esq., Earthjustice Mid-Pacific Office, Hawai’i
• J.V. Langkilde, Esq., Earthjustice Tribal Partnerships Program
• Mae Manupipatpong, Esq., Earthjustice International Program
The workshops are intended to help the people of the Mariånas archipelago participate in the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management of the Department of the Interior’s Request for Information regarding the Commercial Leasing for Outer Continental Shelf Minerals Offshore the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariåna Islands. BOEM is initiating the first steps that could potentially lead to a lease sale for minerals on the Outer Continental Shelf offshore the CNMI by publishing this request for information and interest. The new deadline for comment submissions is Jan. 12, 2026.
Prutehi Guåhan has also developed a comment toolkit to support residents in preparing comments. Participants can expect information on the commenting process, tips and best practices for effective comments, and guidance for comment submission.
