Acting DPW chief briefs Rotarians on Saipan road projects

ACTING Department of Public Works Secretary Ray N. Yumul on Tuesday briefed officers and members of the Rotary Club of Saipan about ongoing road and highway projects.

Yumul, who was the Rotarians’ guest speaker during their weekly luncheon meeting at the Hyatt Regency Saipan’s Giovanni’s Restaurant, began his presentation with the Beach Road improvement project that broke ground the day before at Garapan Fishing Base.

He said the project includes the reconstruction of the road from the As Perdido intersection in Chalan Piao to Micro Beach in Garapan. The construction will begin with a $19.7 million project that covers the 2.2-mile stretch of Beach Road from Chalan Piao to the Atkins Kroll intersection in San Jose.

Next will be the $7.8 million project which includes the re-paving of a three-mile portion of Beach Road from Atkins Kroll to Micro Beach.

Yumul said Beach Road, which was constructed in the late 1980s, will soon have new asphalt pavement with dense anti-skid, pavement markings, road shoulders, drainage systems, driveway connections, and traffic signage.

The road improvement project will include sidewalks, bike lanes and pedestrian crossings, he added.

Yumul also discussed the ongoing construction of Route 36 which will connect Marpi and Talafofo.

Aside from asphalt pavement, he said the project includes retaining walls. Once completed, the brand-new road will provide residents and visitors a scenic view of the ocean, away from residential and commercial traffic activities, he added.
