AS part of the annual Environmental Awareness Month celebration, the Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality is inviting all middle school students to participate in this year’s Recycled Boat — Reduce Reuse Race at Kilili Beach in Oleai on April 29, 2023.
All boats must have a name and must be made of recycled materials except for duct tape, zip ties, rope and glue.
Individuals can register as a team or as a solo participant.
BECQ said the boat should be able to accommodate a minimum of one person and a maximum of six persons.
During the competition, all crew members are required to wear life vests or a floating device. Foot protection is also advisable.
No motors are allowed. The boats must be human-powered, but paddles are accepted whether they are store-bought or made from recycled products.
The course will be 100 meters — 50 meters each way.
The first team to cross the finish line will win first prize. The prizes are $200 for first place, $150 for second place and $100 for third place.
