Briefing on communicable diseases held

Nathan Chin, 3rd year Medical Student at the Hawaii University and Christopher Kitalong, Ph.D. New York Graduate Center, said they made the studies after their visit to ER of BNH.

“Our objective is to help the doctors to be aware of the disease inside the ER and how to prevent it.” Chin said in an interview.

These communicable diseases include: Pharyngitis, otitis media, tonsillitis, gastro enteritis, pneumonia, UTI, bronchitis, cellulitis. While gout, asthma, gastritis, schizophrenia, kidney stones, seizure disorder, benign prostate and prostate cancer are some of the non communicable diseases. For injury/trauma are the: lasceration, multiple abrasion, dog bite, fish hook injury and knee sprain. Constipation, allergic reactions, migraine and medication refills are the other diseases.

Based on the six months research being conducted by Chin on 2008, there were 1, 469 cases of communicable diseases have been recorded in the hospital, 940 for the non- communicable diseases, 639 for injury, and 1198 for other diseases.

Male was the highest rate of visiting ER with an average of 55 percent compare to female with only 45 percent. He also added that 112 of 163 newborns aged one year old below acquired communicable diseases while entering the hospital.

Chin said that if people will not be educated about these diseases it may result to major health problems of an individual.

He said that aim of his briefing is to alert Medical staffs on the most prevalent illness entering ER and to encourage Ministry/Public Health to educate mothers about common cause of ER visit for newborn.
