(JKPL) — In celebration of Disability Rights Awareness Month this February, Joeten-Kiyu Public Library invites the community and families of children with special needs and disabilities to join us for a welcoming and inviting Outdoor Community Sensory Night.
This celebration is set to take place on Friday, Feb. 20, 2026 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. This special event will create a safe, supportive, and sensory-friendly space where families can connect, celebrate, and have fun together.
Sensory Night at JKPL began in the year 2023 with a simple but meaningful goal: to create a space where every child feels seen, valued, and included. Since then, the library team has worked wholeheartedly to learn, grow, and thoughtfully expand its collection of sensory tools and resources to better serve children and families in our community.
“While this event is usually held indoors, we wanted to make it even more special. To truly celebrate the spirit of Disability Rights Awareness Month, we are bringing Sensory Night outdoors — creating more room to move, explore, and enjoy the evening together. By inviting local food vendors to join us, we hope to create a warm, festive atmosphere where families can relax, share a meal, and simply enjoy being part of a supportive community.”
The evening will feature:
• A variety of local food trucks
• Engaging sensory games and interactive toys
• Family-friendly music and entertainment
• A dedicated quiet area in the library for sensory breaks
Disability Rights Awareness Month is observed each February to promote understanding, inclusion, and respect for individuals with disabilities. It recognizes the importance of equal rights, accessibility, and opportunities for people of all abilities. The month also honors the progress made since the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act and encourages communities to continue building environments where everyone belongs.
“At Joeten-Kiyu Public Library, we believe every child deserves to feel celebrated and included,” said JKPL Library Director Erlinda C. Naputi. “Our Outdoor Community Sensory Night is more than just an event — it’s a space where families can relax, connect, and enjoy an evening designed with their needs in mind.”
This event is free and open to the community and all families of children with disabilities and special needs. Caregivers, siblings, and extended family members are welcome. The outdoor setting allows for comfortable movement, while thoughtfully planned activities ensure children can participate at their own pace.
JKPL’s hours of operation are as follows: open Tuesday to Thursday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday 1:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Closed Sundays, Mondays, and holidays.
