THE Lancheros of Chacha Ocean View Middle School and the Canaries of San Vicente Elementary School extended their warm hospitality to the Marianas Tourism Education Council and Marianas Visitors Authority this week during their educational outreach about The Marianas tourism industry.
The MTEC-MVA team engaged 7th graders at COVMS on Monday, April 7, and 4th graders at SVES on Wednesday (April 9), sharing basic facts about The Marianas tourism economy, visitor profiles and activities, the work of MVA, and how and why students can help support the industry.
“The presentation today was very informative and an eye-opener to a lot of our students,” said COVMS 7th grade teacher and MY WAVE Club Advisor Rose Sharon Taimanao. “We do have a MY WAVE Club at our school, and we’re learning more about what other community outreaches we can collaborate with to improve our club. Great presentation!”
MY WAVE — or Marianas Youth Welcome All Visitors Enthusiastically — Clubs engage students in tourism-related activities.
“I think the kids were fully engaged,” said SVES 4th grade teacher Miranda Indalecio. “Great facts from all the agencies and explaining their roles. It was nice how the presentation felt personal and kept the kids entertained.”
With this year’s theme, “Planting Peace – Manånånum Pås- Ffóttol llol Tipiyeew,” the annual school outreach targets 4th graders, 7th graders, and 10th graders on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota with current information and activities highlighting The Marianas’ primary economic driver, the hospitality industry.
MTEC is a non-profit organization whose mission is three-fold: to foster community understanding and support of the visitor industry; to educate the public, especially school students, about the value, social benefits, and economic contributions made to the community by the visitor industry; and to instill, improve, and promote the “Hafa Adai-Tirow” hospitality spirit throughout the island community.
