French Polynesia assembly to shape decolonization resolution

After what was called an informal meeting, the assembly’s commission on international relation is due to draw up the text.

Pro-independence President Oscar Temaru has quickened his campaign to undo the 1947 decision of French leader Charles de Gaulle that removed Tahiti and its islands from the list. He claims to have majority support in the assembly for the resolution which is expected to be voted on next week despite the opposition decrying his move as an act of defiance against the French state.

After failing to win the support of the Pacific Islands Forum four times, Temaru wants to take his latest decolonization initiative to the Auckland summit in September in the hope of seeing the cause being advance for consideration at the U.N. later this year.
