GFD divers find body of missing fisherman

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — The body of a missing fisherman was located Thursday morning.

After the Guam Fire Department launched a search for an overdue fisherman at about 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, divers were able to locate the body of the fisherman Thursday morning.

“At 7:52 a.m. GFD divers located the body of the missing fisherman at approximately 45 (feet) below the surface,” GFD spokesperson Nick Garrido shared with the local media at about 9 a.m. on Thursday.

After the fisherman – a 40-year-old male – was found, his body was transported to the Hågatña Marina by a GFD vessel before being transported to Guam Memorial Hospital. Garrido added that the Guam Police Department was on scene to conduct an investigation.

Search

On Wednesday, GFD stated Rescue and Engine units responded to a reported overdue fisherman at 1:28 p.m. before searching the shore and waters of Asan Beach.

The Coast Guard along with the Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 25, or HSC-25, joined the efforts as the search continued until 8 p.m. on Wednesday before starting again at 6 a.m. on Thursday.

Advisory

Along with announcing that the fisherman’s body was located, Garrido reminded the community on behalf of GFD to adhere to hazardous surf and sea warnings.

On Tuesday, Guam Homeland Security/Office of Civil Defense stated that the National Weather Service Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a high surf advisory until 6 p.m. Wednesday.

“Large breaking waves of 9 to 13 feet are expected. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions,” GHS/OCD stated while also indicating there would be a high risk of rip currents through Thursday afternoon.

“Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from the shore into deeper water,” GHS/OCD said.
