GFD, GPD bring awareness to an uptick in burning cars

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — The Guam Fire Department and Guam Police Department hope to bring awareness to the dangers of abandoned car fires.

On Friday, GFD spokesperson Nick Garrido shares with the media that GFD “has seen an increase in abandoned vehicle fires over the last several weeks.”

In light of the increase, both GFD and GPD are requesting the community’s assistance “of bringing awareness to the community and the dangers these vehicle fires impose,” Garrido said.

“Should anyone within the community see something, please report it through 911,” added Garrido, who also shared a video of several cars found burning on Route 9 in the Agafa Gumas area early Friday morning.

Garrido also gave The Guam Daily Post a list of some of the dangers of burning cars:

  • Possibility of pistons or pressurized parts within the vehicle which could explode and injure responders or civilians.
  • Smoke emitting could cause harm to nearby residents who may have medical conditions.
  • Many unknowns within the abandoned vehicles; what items may be inside that may be hazardous.
