In a telephone interview, Salii said that he agrees with the HOD resolution citing that this is an opportunity for the development of the Angaur, specially on the economic and infrastructure.
Salii, however, refused to comment if the members of State’s Legislature will also agree with the resolution.
He said that he is speaking with his own decision in supporting the HOD resolution.
The house resolution’s title “incorporating a specific support role for the Angaur State airfield in the U.S. military’s strategic planning for the relocation of the Futenna Airbase from Okinawa, Japan was adopted by the HOD after the house Committee on Foreign Relations and State Affairs endorsed the approval of the resolution.
The committee chaired by Del. Rebluud Kesolei said that the committee has received comments from State Minister Victor Yano, Compact Review Ambassador Joshua Koshiba and former State Minister Victor Ucherbelau and from these comments they committee finds that ‘encouraging a role for the Angaur airstrip in the U.S military relocation could facilitate both economic and transportation infrastructure in the Republic specially the State of Angaur.
The resolution is also asking President Johnson Toribiong to go through diplomatic channels stating that under the Compact of Free Association, the U.S military has the option to use lands in Palau.
Kesolei added that Angaur was formerly used by the U.S military during the World War II.
