HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — Guam Power Authority invites the island to celebrate the annual Public Power Week, coordinated by the American Public Power Association. In the first week of October, GPA collaborates with over 2,000 U.S. community-powered, not-for-profit electric utilities providing electricity to 49 million people across 49 states and five U.S. territories, according to a news release from GPA.
From now until Oct. 13, GPA will work on its initiatives to support nonprofit organizations to continue the tradition of Public Power Week.
Nonperishable food items are being collected by GPA employees to stock the shelves of Catholic Social Service’s food pantry. GPA will be assisting with upcoming Special Olympics events and working with schools on island to “promote energy conservation and energy sustainability to the next generation of islanders through hands-on, classroom learning,” said the release.
GPA General Manager John Benavente said the activities of the annual Public Power Week focus on educating communities and customers on public power benefits and its place in improving the lives of those communities.
“For the past 55 years, GPA has been the main provider for the island’s power source, and we continue to grow and develop alongside our island’s needs,” said Benavente.
“Public Power Week is the ideal time to thank five generations of GPA customers and employees who have supported us throughout the last 55 years. Our mission remains to provide the most sustainable, reliable and cost-effective energy future for the people of Guam,” he said.
