HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — A man who was accused of kidnapping a 2-year-old girl was discovered during an investigation to have taken custody of the child because of the “well-being and erratic state” of the child’s mother, law enforcement officials said.
On Sunday, an Amber Alert was issued for 2-year-old Lucialyn Aflleje, who allegedly was taken from her home in Dededo by Eugene Wayne Tudela Huffman.
The Guam Police Department initially stated Huffman took the child after an altercation between him and the child’s mother. Huffman, the child and Huffman’s son then were located at Naval Hospital Guam for a separate issue not related to the reported kidnapping
However, on Monday, the Guam Police Department stated in a press release that it was determined through an investigation that Katina Aflleje, the child’s mother, who made the report of the kidnapping, “fabricated” certain details that were “inconsistent with the allegations made against Mr. Huffman.”
“Investigations reveal that Mr. Huffman had taken physical custody of Lucialyn Aflleje under circumstances related to the well-being and erratic state of Katina,” police stated in the release.
As a result, Katina Aflleje was arrested on suspicion of child abuse before being booked and released “under circumstances beyond the Guam Police Department,” according to the release.
Police also stated Lucialyn Aflleje was removed from the custody of Katina Aflleje and placed with Child Protective Services, while the case has been forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General.
Huffman was released and not arrested because there was no probable cause, according to GPD spokesperson Officer Berlyn Savella.
