Center. The first 100 people who arrived were welcomed with giveaways that included miscellaneous trinkets, “No Buttheads” t-shirts and popular tv show posters.
The event began with videos encouraging youth to avoid alcohol, tobacco and other drugs and a special 3-D version of Shrek that gave a chance for the audience to try out their 3-D glasses. The Karaoke Contest followed with nine contestants who sang their best for the audience, but Cesca Morei-Misch won the audience’s heart singing “Love will keep us alive”.At approximately 9:50, the lights dimmed for the awesome 3-D effects of Hannah Montana and the Jonas Brothers, who rocked the building. “This was a great opportunity initiated by PNCC that allowed for a fun night for the whole family for free, and at the same time provided a chance for us to promote our alcohol and tobacco free messages” remarked Valerie Whipps, Program Manager for the Tobacco Control Program.Maura Gordon, Coordinator for the SPF-SIG programs added “The event successfully captured our target audience with 5-17 year olds comprising 74% of the audience.” While the event was slated to end late due to the live telecast schedule, it went smoothly and without incident. The whole telecast had no snags due to PNCC’s expertise and preparedness, and the audience were at their best behavior.“We were especially impressed with parents and guardians who accompanied their children or who promptly picked up their kids afterwards. The police officers who assisted with the event also observed that the foot traffic after the event mainly consisted of youth who lived near the cultural center,” commented Kambes Kesolei, Chairman for the Coalition for a Tobacco Free Palau. Special thanks goes to PNCC for the free live concert telecast, 3-D glasses, and airtime for the karaoke contest prizes.NECO Plaza is also thanked for donating gift certificates as additional karaoke contest prizes.Much appreciation also goes out to the Koror State Rangers and the LEEP kids for volunteering security within the building and for the Idid Youth for doing the clean up afterwards. The event was sponsored by the STUN-Tobacco Control Program, SPF-SIG Programs, and the Coalition for a Tobacco Free Palau. If you have any questions or comments, you may contact 488-8118 or email to [email protected].
