BOI Director Jenkins Mariur said more than $10,000 fine have been collected by the bureau from the employers who are violating the Immigration law.
Last week the BOI issued citation to both employer and employee for violating Immigration law.
Under the law, the penalty for an overstaying employee is $500 and $20 for the employer. The fine is $20 per day for the employer for being liable of his/her employee.
Mariur said any foreign worker who has no proper documentation to stay in Palau will be deported.
However, the BOI will give 10 days due process to settle their status. Failure to do, the case will be forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General.
Meanwhile, the BOI is waiting the United Nations (UN) response for the Chinese national seeking asylum on Palau.
Mariur said the Foreign Affairs is now communicating with the UN refugee office for the status of the Chinese.
“The Chinese national entered the Island on March 28 as a tourist but while he is staying in the country he started visiting other agency like the US Embassy and the UN Joint Mission Office and asking about seeking asylum.” Mariur said in an interview.
On Monday, the BOI invited the Chinese following reports being undertaken by the latter.
“Based on his explanation, he came in the Island hoping to help him to work his refugee status. Mariur added.”
Palau is not a member of UN refugee relation. Nevertheless, Marius said, there were at least 12 Myanmar refugees staying in the country. He said they are looking for a place to relocate them.
