Independence Day organizers prepares for Oct 1 celebration

Committee Chairman, Fritz Koshiba said that the celebration for the Independence Day will start as early as Sept. 26 with softball tournaments.

 The celebration will also include the yearly essay contest and a bike-a thon.The committee has also lined up a Walk n Pick Activity on Sept. 30 with the national government employees participating in this activity.This year’s theme is “Palau in Motion for a Healthy Nation.”Koshiba is encouraging the community to join in the celebration and booths will also be set up at the venue which is at the KB Bridge Koror side.A healthy lifestyle fair will be set up from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Bethlehem Park on Sept. 30.The Independence Day celebration will not be complete without the Sport Fishing Event.The actual festivities will kick off with a Canoe Race or swimming event.The opening ceremony will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.In the afternoon of the Oct. 1, the highlight of the celebration will be Omikoshi and Parade.Instead of fireworks,a live concert and raffle giveaway will cap the festivities.Koshiba said the group which has been donating fireworks to Palau has instead used the money for worthwhile causes.The Japanese group he said has donated the money to the Hospital and the Palau Community College (PCC).Koshiba added that there are about 300 Japanese tourists who will attend the celebration.Other dignitaries are expected to attend the celebration.
