Public Infrastructure, Natural Resources and Commerce Minister Jackson Ngiraingas has called on the public to start conserving water because of the lack of rain in the past few days, the Ngerikiil Dam’s water level is a few inches down its normal level.
“We have asked the public for water conservation. It is not yet an alarming situation,” Ngiraingas said.
The Ngerikiil Dam supplies water in the entire island but because of the dry season, wasting water could place the supply into a critical level.
Ngiraingas asked the public not to use water too much in cleaning vehicles.
Neighboring countries of Palau like the Philippines are experiencing drought-like conditions.
The minister said that Palau should take note of its water consumption to prevent rationing of supplies.
He added that because of the lack of rain and the dry season, the demand for water is most likely to increase.
He said the public should not wait until there is a crisis by heeding the call from the government to conserve water.
