On some occasions, I noticed that teachers drew triangles freehand on the board. The triangles were incorrect. It is important to draw accurate triangles, therefore rulers are an essential tool. The teachers informed me that they did not have triangle rulers, compass, and protractor in their schools to use for instructions.
Earlier in the previous school year during the Education Awareness Week, I presented ruler sets to all schools 7th and 8th grade students who participated in the multiplication table test as a prize. The students now had ruler sets but not the teachers. Then, during the summer workshops held for the teachers, I drew a circle with a compass on the board. After the lesson, one of the teachers asked me, “When you leave Koror, can I get your entire ruler set?” They wanted to use the ruler set for their math lessons. Fortunately, as JICA Senior Volunteer, I was able to acquire financial assistance from JICA Palau Office to purchase 16 ruler sets for the 16 schools. In each set are 2 triangle rulers, compass, protractor, and straight ruler. It is my hope that every school teacher will be able to draw the correct figure during their lessons and to help advance Math in Palau.
