June is CNMI Pride Month

GOVERNOR Ralph DLG Torres on Wednesday last week signed a proclamation designating June as CNMI Pride Month.

Joining him were Lt. Gov. Arnold I. Palacios, first lady Diann T. Torres, PRIDE Marianas-Youth members, lawmakers, cabinet officials and community partners.

The governor noted how the CNMI community is able to build on its remarkable progress to “uplift, center, and support lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities across generations, spanning every sexual orientation and gender identity.”

In 2016, Torres became the first governor in CNMI history and in the Pacific to proclaim Pride Month.

“We urge the entire CNMI to come together and support our LGBTQ+ community, recognize their many contributions to our society, and promote equality and liberty for all. In doing so, we commit to creating a braver, safer, and more inclusive Marianas,” the governor said in a statement.

He also gave special thanks and recognition to Dr. Bobby Cruz for sharing his story, Dr. Jennifer Maratita, Ana Ada, Sharina Clark, Pride Marianas Youth for their leadership in organizing Pride Month, the Legislature, the department heads, and community partners for being allies.
