Koror elementary students show off scientific prowess

“We’re trying to motivate the kids to become interested in science and make time for it, not just as one subject, but as something that they will look into as a field to pursue in the future,” said Julia Wally, Science Coordinator of Koror Elementary School.

Wally explained that they have four categories for this year’s Science Fair: Collection, modeling, demonstration and investigation. This year they wanted to try something new, so they allowed the kids to choose which category they want to do.

For the Collection category, the kids can show off their collections, whether they’re rocks or leaves. Wally said this category depends on the students and what they want to collect and what they want to aim for the collection.

Demonstration category is about stuff that the students have tried in the classroom. “We encourage the students to choose what they want to demonstrate and expand from there,” Wally explained.

Modeling is mostly about things that they have learned in class.

“We’re looking for unique ideas that show understanding related to nature,” said Wally.

Investigation, on the other hand, is a little more complex. The kids need to start an original project and collect information about it.

“Our goal is to keep them curious,” shared Wally.

Parents are very supportive of their kids’ projects. And some of them helped judge the works of the students. Prizes and certificates were prepared the participants.
