13 teams to join PIC’s Race around the River

The Race Around the River will be held at the PIC Lazy River on Feb. 19, just before the launching of the 2011 Duck Race for Cancer.

PIC sports manager Dennis Tababa said the participating companies/organizations are  Ideal Signs, Triple JJJ, G4S, Coca Cola/Foremost, KSPN,  Pacific Islands Club-Saipan SEA Department, Northern Marianas College, Island Apparel, NMC College Access Challenge Project, Pacific Islands Club- Saipan Room Division, Pacific Islands Club-Saipan Guest Relations Department, Pacific Trading Company and IT&E.

PIC opened 16 slots for the Race Around the River, which means only three more slots are open.

Representatives from these companies will don duck bills, swim caps, goggles, lifejackets and swim fins as they swim around PIC’s Lazy River. There will be four heats involving four participants with the top two participants advancing.

A final heat of the top eight swimmers will complete one more lap around the river. The winner will receive a team-building laser tag party for up to 30 people for his or her organization.

“We really wanted to attract some of the larger companies and organizations on island. This event will be like no other. We expect to fill the remaining three slots well before race day,” Tababa said.

For the duck race, PIC sold plastic ducks at the Garapan street market yesterday. More will be sold on Feb. 17. They will also be selling ducks right up until the 6 p.m., the starting time of the race on Feb. 19. Over 1,200 plastic ducks have already been sold from supporters in the CNMI and from off-island through online payments.

Supporters can buy ducks online through Paypal payments addressed to [email protected] and sent as a gift. Check payments should be made payable to Pacific Islands Club-Saipan. Plastic ducks are $5 each, and corporate fees for the Race Around the River is $100.

All proceeds from the Duck Race for Cancer and the Race Around the River Cancer will go help the fight against cancer.
