149 more applicants eligible for SHEFA assistance

This brings to 410 the number of eligible applicants for the fall semester as of Sept. 22, SHEFA Administrator Henry Hofschneider said yesterday.

In a recent meeting, the SHEFA board approved the recommendation to award 261 eligible applicants scholarship assistance.

The office is still expecting  more eligible applicants when it receives supporting documents by Sept. 30 deadline, Hofschneider said.

“The turnout of submission of support documents is fast and we are still expecting more from off-island applicants,” he added.

He said his office will accept supporting documents as long as they were post-marked before the deadline.

Noncompliance with SHEFA rules and regulations is the primary reason some applications were rejected, he added.

In such cases, Hofschneider said they immediately send a denial letter to the applicant  so he or she can have time to re-submit an application.

If it’s still denied, the applicants may appeal to the board.

“Many have wrote back asking for another review of their applications,” Hofschneider said.

SHEFA received 787 applications and is projecting to approve 520 commensurate with the total funding available for fiscal year 2011.

SHEFA is funded by Saipan’s annual poker license fee collections.
