Motheread is a nationally acclaimed family literacy program that teaches parents how to use stories to improve their children’s academic skills in reading, writing, comprehension and critical thinking.
The program was introduced in the CNMI in 1998 by the NMI Council for the Humanities.
According to the council’s executive director, Scott Russell, the newly certified parent-trainers will facilitate Motheread sessions in elementary schools, Head Start centers and public libraries.
Parents who successfully complete the program are given completion certificates, books, and book bags.
“The council is very pleased to have the services of a new group of dedicated community volunteers and we look forward to expanding this important grassroots literacy program on Saipan, Tinian and Rota over the coming years,” Russell said.
The training institute was supported by a major grant from the Bank of Hawaii Charitable Foundation and additional donations by DFS Saipan, the Bank of Guam, the Bank of Saipan, and the Tan Siu Lin Foundation.
Parents wishing to enroll in the Motheread program are invited to contact Motheread coordinator Viola S. Deleon Guerrero at 235-7319 or email [email protected].
