2 million pennies worth of ‘blue’ fun

If so, go check out the gorgeous Sky Blue Bullet; officially known as the Mazda 3.

On a Saturday impulse, this reporter pulled into Triple J Motors and asked general manager Randy Steele if I could test drive and review a car from a woman’s perspective.

The always-welcoming Steele seemed a little amused at the idea but graciously offered one of the cutest vehicles imaginable, handed over the slick key control and commented, “Have fun.”

Fun does not do the car justice — the experience was great!

For a short woman of five-feet two inches this car was a dream fit.

Sliding into the driver’s seat felt like slipping on a tailor-made shoe; not too loose and not too tight — absolutely perfect.

For a driver who seeks proportion between their physical size and a car’s interior, the beautiful bullet felt welcoming and spacious.

The interior’s ideal design opened up and expanded the sense of space within the car.

Adding to the feeling of airiness was the massive front windshield and thin door framing.

The test drive felt literally like a picturesque dream; the expansive field of vision provided photo perfect views of beautiful Saipan as if floating in air.

Heightening the sense of exhilaration during the drive were the smartly placed stereo control buttons on the steering wheel’s left side.

With only a light flick of a left finger one can toggle between the CD and the radio, fire up the volume to sing along to a favorite song or instantly mute the sound to talk or answer the phone.

As if those features were not fun enough, the car offered a very zippy, responsive gas pedal that propelled me around Garapan and up Middle Road in a flash (no police in sight — thank goodness!).

The bullet handled easily as well with minimal effort; a refreshing change for this driver who ‘muscles’ her Isuzu 4WD around the island.

“Sporty drive,” was Mazda’s description of the bullet in the brochure in part due to its dual automatic-manual gear system.

A driver can choose the mode they prefer; automatic for a carefree ride or shifting for a sportier trip and when climbing up hills and descending steep roads.

This reporter would have loved to play around with all the gadgets the car offered for the entire day but sadly, reality called and it was back to a beaten-up old beach buggy and hunting for lost pennies in pockets and furniture.

Coincidentally, the Mazda 3 was on a Christmas special offer that included a $3,000 savings off the sticker price.

So, stop by the dealership, ask general manager Steele for the holiday deal, and mention an extremely envious reporter referred you!
