2 pharmacy interns here for community service

Benjamen R. Curry and Steve J. Evans, both in their sixth year at the College of Pharmacy at the University of Hawaii, arrived on Saipan on May 18 for the their internship with PHI Pharmacy. They will graduate from the College of Pharmacy next year.

Evans told the Variety that it was their choice to come here and contribute their services to Saipan.

“We have batchmates who are now in American Samoa, Guam and other islands, but we really wanted to come here,” Evans said.

Curry said  they are grateful to PHI Pharmacy president Bruce Cohen for accommodating them.

For the last three weeks, both interns have been involved in conducting lectures and demonstrations in schools and elsewhere in the community to spread awareness  about the prevalent diseases on island including diabetes, asthma, hypertension and gout.

Last week, they had a booth during the Gregorio T. Camacho Elementary School Cultural Day and Health Fair. They provided blood screening and blood pressure testing to members of the community.

They were also on the John Gonzales TV show to talk about health issues.

Last Saturday, the interns set up a PHI Pharmacy booth and offered free blood pressure and sugar testing during the Art Exhibit and Performance Festival at Hopwood Junior High School.

Yesterday, the two were scheduled to join the blood and sugar testing at the Philippine Consulate General in Susupe.

“On Friday, we will return to GTC Elementary School and conduct a body mass index or BMI calculation for the students,” Evans said.

For the remaining weeks of their stay in the CNMI, Curry and Evans will continue to provide community services.

They will leave Saipan on June 27.
