26 graduate from home décor, sewing class

Philippine Consul General Wilfredo D.L. Maximo said the newly acquired sewing skills of the participants could help boost their family incomes amid the escalating cost of goods.

“These skills will prove very useful for the participants because even when they go back to the Philippines, or go anywhere else, they can start a small enterprise,” Maximo said.

He added that learning how to sew curtains and furniture covers can also help households save money.

“Instead of buying new clothes, furniture and home décor, the participants now learned to use scraps from cloths and come up with something beautiful,” Maximo said.

He expects that more classes will follow to allow more people to learn valuable skills.

Philippine labor representative Joan Lourdes D. Lavilla said the participants are now better equipped to come up with livelihood projects to earn more.

“There’s no more reason to go hungry, and you can use your acquired knowledge wherever you go,” Lavilla said.

Philippine welfare officer Leonor C. Mabagal said the participants made the right decision to enroll.

“This is one of the most in-demand training sessions because the product outcomes are fast selling,” Mabagal said.

The home décor plus sewing classes were held from 9 a.m. to 12 noon starting on Aug. 10. The instructor was Ma. Teresa A. De Jesus.

The works of the participants were showcased during yesterday’s graduation ceremony and they included curtains, bags, throw pillows, cushions, seat covers, and other products from bits and scraps of cloths.
