During a special meeting of the Board of Education, it was disclosed that the figure was recorded as of Friday noon and may increase in the coming days.
Six classroom teachers will be leaving Kagman High School; five, Hopwood Junior High; three, Tinian High School; and two each from Dandan, Gregorio T. Camacho, and Kagman Elementary schools.
Also resigning are one teacher each from Chacha Oceanview Junior High, Marianas High School, Rota High School, Saipan Southern High, San Vicente Elementary and the special education program.
PSS has 515 classroom teachers this school year. Every year, it loses 80 employees who will either retire or resign.
The 31 resigning this year included classroom teachers whose two-year contracts were not renewed by their school principals.
The number of teachers whose contracts were not renewed was not disclosed.
The acting associate education commissioner for administrative services, Charlie Kenty, said PSS has an ongoing recruitment efforts.
He said PSS-HRO is following up on the job fairs it attended off-island.
“We already got about eight commitments so far and we’re constantly communicating with them online or through our principals,” Kenty said.
He said PSS stands to lose three more personnel who are scheduled to retire this year.
