6 CPA board nominees await Senate OK

Last week, the senators approved the appointment of former Tinian Sen. Manuel P. Villagomez.

Gov. Benigno R. Fitial, who has taken over CPA through a state of emergency declarations, also nominated former Saipan Sen. Thomas P. Villagomez, former Rep. Absalon Waki Jr., former Speaker Jose R. Lifoifoi, Frank Camacho, Miriam Seman and Barry Toves of Rota.

Lifoifoi served as the chairman of the CPA board during the Babauta administration. He earlier declined to be reappointed by Fitial, who has nominated him again.

A party mate of the governor in the previous Legislature, Waki is now the advertising manager of Tan Holdings’ Saipan Tribune.

If confirmed, Waki will serve a four-year term.

Camacho will serve until June 28, 2009, while Seman’s term ends on March 30, 2009.

Toves’ term will end on May 14, 2010.

Fitial, in his letter to the Senate, said the administration is confident that his nominees will be assets  to the CPA board.

Acting CPA Executive Director Lee Cabrera said the board should be restored before the expiration of the governor’s emergency declaration on Aug. 12.

“The CPA management and staff believe that it is more prudent to restore CPA’s board as soon as possible to ensure that the changes which have taken place are carried through to completion,” Cabrera said.
