Demapan, in an interview, said Gov. Benigno R. Fitial, Commonwealth Utilities Corporation Executive Director Utu Abe Malae, water task force chief Pete Sasamoto and Office of Insular Affairs capital improvement project coordinator Keith Aughenbaugh cut the ceremonial ribbon at 10 a.m. on Friday for the central Garapan waterline.
The project, whose contract was awarded to Tropex Garden Company, was funded by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration and OIA.
Fitial lauded the local CIP office, OIA, the water task force and Tropex Garden for their efforts to bring the much needed development to fruition.
“The completion of this project is yet another affirmation of the CNMI’s commitment to maximizing the use of federal funds for the benefit of our island community,” Fitial said.
Demapan said because of the waterline, residents of central Garapan and nearby areas can now enjoy a stable supply of water.
Last month, Fitial opened the valve of the Rapogao water tank and distribution system which was also a collaborative effort between the CNMI and federal governments.
“It is always gratifying to know that despite the challenges we face, the commonwealth, through…federal funding opportunities, is still able to move forward in terms of infrastructure development,” Fitial said.
