AG, OPA probing Saipan mayor’s office

“We cannot further comment on the ongoing probe,” Public Auditor Michael Pai said on Friday.

Some lawmakers earlier requested an audit of the Liberation Day expenses.

Pai said his office lacks  manpower and its six auditors have “audit engagements” with two major government agencies.

But, he added, OPA is committed to complete the audit for the mayor’s office.

“It will never be forgotten,” he said.

Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela, in a separate interview on Friday, said he wasn’t aware of any investigation involving his office.

He said no formal notification was received by his office.

Tudela added, however, that he welcomes any effort of OPA and the AGO to look into his records.

The mayor believes that no anomalies occurred in the disbursement of the Liberation Day funds.
