“The hope of the people of our region for better government through the end of government waste and corruption lies in this room. I rarely speak outside the courtroom, but I could not pass up the opportunity to address this most important body, particularly because it will be the last such conference for our Public Auditor Mike Sablan,” he said.
“The law enforcement side will want to seek prosecution first and foremost, and utilize resources to the neglect of some audit work. The public auditor, as an accountant, will seek to complete as many audits as possible to reveal to the people as well as the government where public waste and graft exist,” he added.
Sablan is scheduled to leave his post this month.
Press Secretary Charles Reyes Jr. said Gov. Benigno R. Fitial has yet to nominate Sablan’s replacement.
Gregory credits Sablan for substantive audit reports that saved CNMI taxpayers’ money.
“I am very sorry to see him go. I can say without reservation that his courage and honesty will be missed,” he said.
