Airport project will get $2M from FAA

West Tinian International Airport will receive $2 million from the Federal Aviation Administration, according to Commonwealth Ports Authority Executive Director Carlos H. Salas.

Salas said Tinian’s apron will be expanded by 200 ft. Funding for the project will come from the FAA’s discretionary funds for fiscal year 2002.

The CPA board of directors approved the project during its regular meeting last week on Rota.

“The board approved additional improvements on Tinian. This would include the expansion of the apron by 200 ft. and recondition the existing taxi way. The apron is where you park the aircraft,” Salas said.

He said several terminal improvements on Tinian would also be completed to address the additional security measures required by the FAA as a result of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

“There will be additional terminal improvements on Tinian,” Salas added

The FAA and Tinian, through its share of federal funds for capital improvement projects, will finance the additional improvements at the terminal which will cost $2 million.

During the same meeting, the board also ranked the top engineering firms that they intend to hire for the environmental assessment study of the apron expansion project.

Salas said Juan C. Tenorio & Associates tops the list. Duenas & Associates is second and Winzler & Kelly came in third.

Salas said they would negotiate with JCT & Associates
