Airport safety rules OK’d

KOROR (Palau Horizon) — President Tommy Remengesau has signed a comprehensive report on airport safety regulations in an effort to “intensify protection” at Palau International Airport.

The chief executive signed the report during a visit of a delegation representing the Federal Aviation Administration.

Remengesau said the regulations were prepared by the Palau government with the help of the FAA.

“The regulations meet international airport standards and are necessary for the republic to effectively respond to pending proposals for new domestic airlines that would fly international routes in and out of Palau,” the president said.

He said it followed earlier promulgation of airport security regulations in response to the tragic events of Sept. 11.

“It is essential that the FAA and the U.S. government supplement these safety documents with concrete safety programs, as recommended shortly after the incidents of Sept. 11, that adequately respond to the realities of air safety since that horrendous event,” Remengesau said during the signing ceremony.
