American Memorial Park ends student summer program today

Federal Ranger Nancy Kelchner told the Variety that games and entertainment will follow the picnic they are hosting today.

“There will be games such as tug of war, balloon games, races and more,” she said.

Kelchner said four students started the summer program on June 28 and got a chance to acquaint themselves with what rangers do on a day to day basis.

“For the past two months, the students worked alongside with us from picking trash to entertaining visitors at the museum,” she said.

Kelchner said students were able to come up with two new activity booklets for children.

“They came up with a booklet for the junior rangers and another one for the Talk Like a Pirate Month which we will be celebrating next month,” she said.

This is  fourth year for the summer program which selects four students each year.

This year, the four students were chosen when their names were drawn from a total of 84 applicants.

“I wished that we can take more students each year. We are sorry to have so many disappointed kids who would have liked to avail of the summer program but we can only take four,” she said.

Kelchner said they have invited the U.S. Navy and the JROTC to join today’s activities.

Last month, the park hosted 20 students from the 4th to the 6th grades who joined the first Reef Ranger Camp.
