Hosted by the Yap Historic Preservation Office and held in conjunction with the National Park Service’s Pacific Island Historic Preservation Annual Consultation Meeting, the two-day course provided an overview of the federal preservation program and introduced the purposes and principles of historic preservation reviews conducted under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, which requires federal agencies to assess the effects of their projects on historic properties.
During the course, ACHP archaeologist Dr. Tom McCulloh and historian and preservation planner Blythe Semmer emphasized issues relevant to the Pacific environment.
U.S. Ambassador to the FSM Peter A. Prahar thanked the council and the participants in the course for their efforts to protect and preserve Yap’s unique historical legacy.
