An educator inspired by kids

Her son also inspired her to become an educator.

“When I began working with the children I developed a bond with them — a bond not only between a teacher to students, but it was like being friends with them too,” she said.

Guerrero said students will learn better if their lessons are complemented with an activity

“If you are teaching math, turning the lesson into an activity like a game will allow students to easily learn it,” she said.

It is also important that the children learn values as well as social skills because these teach responsibility, she added.

“My students have to write a book on responsibility,” she said.

She gives them assigned tasks in the classroom.

They clean up and have to put everything back into place.

“I let them know that this is not my class, this is our class, and we have to be responsible for everything, for each other,” she added.

She started teaching last December.

“I just came in new to the class. They had a previous teacher before me. So when she left they had substitutes. So my students were a little bit behind compared to the rest of the third grade levels,” Guerrero said.

She is planning to take a post-graduate course to further enhance her skills as an educator. “I’m currently looking for an online university because I want to pursue my master’s. I’ve been looking into special education or educational psychology and want to start it as soon as possible,” she said

A San Vicente Elementary School and Saipan Southern High School graduate, she completed the bachelor of arts in education program at Northern Marianas College  last December.

She took and passed her Praxis II two years ago and her Praxis I before becoming a teacher candidate.
