Another dead green sea turtle found at Managaha

CNMI conservation coordinator and DFW enforcement chief Marianne C. Teregeyo said they received a call on Friday from a boat captain at 9:35 a.m., informing them about the dead green sea turtle floating about 600 feet west of Managaha.

The fore flippers of the turtle were tied.

The latest incident prompted DFW to once again remind the general public that green sea turtles are endangered species and it’s against both local and federal laws to catch these animals.

Teregeyo is calling on anyone who has information about people engaged in catching green sea turtles to call the following numbers: DFW Enforcement — 888-49-17, 888-59-06; National Hotline (Guam) — 808-541-2727, 671-472-7200 and USFW Guam 671-647-6064.

Last month, a juvenile green sea turtle was found dead southeast of Managaha.

When examined at the DFW laboratory, a fishing hook was found inside the animal’s small intestine.

A green sea turtle believed to have died of hunger was found in June 2007 in the waters off Bird Island.

Another died of wounds and was found in the waters off Marine Beach in July 2007.

Teregeyo said poachers will have to pay penalties that cost more than what they earn from catching green sea turtles.
