Funds for NMI children’s health insurance to triple

CNMI funding will triple to $1.8 million per year.

“This is one of the largest percentage increases for any state or territory,” he said. “And the bill is on track to be signed into law very shortly.”

The State Children’s Health Insurance Program is targeted at families that earn too much to qualify for Medicaid but cannot afford private health insurance for their children.

Currently, the CNMI receives $600,000. That will increase to $1.8 million immediately, when the law is passed.

Democrats in Congress twice had similar legislation vetoed by then-President Bush.

President Obama is expected to sign the new SCHIP bill, fulfilling a campaign pledge to expand health insurance coverage for children.

Sablan is a member of the House Democratic Caucus.
