Another violence awareness walk set for tomorrow

Maisie B. Tenorio of the Northern Marianas Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Violence earlier called on the community to participate in the various activities set for the whole month.

These, she said, aim to spread awareness throughout the community and the world that “domestic violence should not be accepted, and for the victims of domestic violence to feel they are not alone.”

Last Friday, over 200 members of the community representing various sectors joined the candle light vigil and walk from Minachom Atdao in Susupe to the former Hakubotan building in Chalan Laulau and back.

U.S. Congressman Gregorio C. Sablan, Superior Court  Judge Kenneth L. Govendo and Rep. Ralph DLG. Torres led the long line of people who joined the walk to spread the message that domestic violence should not be tolerated here or anywhere else.

The other participants included representatives from the Community Guidance Center, the Criminal Justice Planning Agency, the Division of Youth Services, the Office of Adult Probation, the Board of Parole, Marianas High School, Saipan Southern High School and the Head Start program.

The theme for this year’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month is “Embracing Hope: Healing Generations, One Survivor at a Time.”

An outreach program for the Wise Women Village Project is also scheduled at the Tanapag social hall on Oct. 17, 24 and 31.

The Northern Marianas Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Violence representatives are available at the street market in Garapan every Thursday to entertain questions and provide information about domestic violence. For more information, call 664-4584.
