The courses are offered as part of the college’s mission to provide customized, continuing educational and professional development opportunities in response to community needs.
Additionally, the classes, which are designed to improve individual knowledge and specific skills, are geared around actual workforce needs and experiences based on course surveys, community needs assessments, and interviews with employers.

Certificates of attendance and competence will be awarded to registered students who complete all course requirements.

WIA participants complete administrative assistant training
O’Net Online provides a summary of the duties for administrative assistant: Provide high-level administrative support by conducting research, preparing statistical reports, handling information requests, and performing clerical functions such as preparing correspondence, receiving visitors, arranging conference calls, and scheduling meetings. May also train and supervise lower-level clerical staff.
Before you could qualify to perform the above duties, you must be proficient in using office technology using the most common tool in the workplace: the computer and its applications. Many participants are computer literate using the Internet but fall short on computer skills to perform relevant work.
The Workforce Investment Agency and Northern Marianas College have been partners in providing training programs designed to assist participants acquire the necessary skills to be able to compete in the job market. WIA is proud to feature its participants that have successfully completed the administrative assistants training at NMC.
Currently, there are a total of 31 participants referred to the NMC Community Development Institute to attend: Keyboarding, E-mail, The Best Way to Communicate, How to Use Word Processing Applications, Creating Digital Presentations, How to Use Spreadsheet Applications, Communication in the Workplace, Stress Management, Basic Customer Service Skills Training, Work Etiquette Training and Time Management.
17 participants have completed the courses and are receiving intensive services — training at the workplace — or have chosen to further their education.
Leslie Ada, Crystal Lizama and Joanne Castro are with the Torres Brothers Law Firm; Victoria Aldan has enrolled full time at NMC for a degree program; Meagan Agulto has been hired full time at Revenue & Taxation; Rosario Camacho, Ireksin Made, Chantel Taitano have been selected for training at NMC’s Office of Records and Admission; Jennifer Ada and Ina Ruben were already under the WIA Work Experience Program placed at Joeten Enterprises and attended these courses to enhance their skills at the workplace.
There are 14 more participants that will be completing these courses by March 12, 2009. Each participant receives a certificate of completion from NMC providing the employer the assurance that these individuals come with the required credential for administrative entry level positions. Additionally, these credentials enhances the individual’s resumé at their current employment or as they search the market for employment opportunities.
