Around the Islands: Motheread/Fatheread course session ends

They danced to the tune of Ming Lo Moves the Mountain by Arnold Lobel.

They sympathized with Amelia’s quest for acceptance in “Amelia’s Road” by Linda Jacobs Altman.

They compared themselves to the comical yet lifelike characters of the story “Wings: A Tale of Two Chickens,” by James Marshall.

They empathized with the little girl in the story “A chair for my Mother,” by Vera B. Williams, and agreed with Robert Munsch’s “Love You Forever” that the lasting nature of parental love traverses generation.

The participant’s enthusiasm in this course cycle was unbelievable.

Participants Dolores Andrade, Bernadette Manuel, and Shin Duk Hwang were very eager to present their short presentation to their children and few friends that have gathered at the Children of Our Homeland Cultural Center, Joeten-Kiyu Public Library for the closing occasion.

They role-played the characters of the story “Wing: A tale of Two Chickens.”

The short presentation was well received by the audience present at the library.

Before the presenting the certificates of completion, Viola Deleon Guerrero, CNMI Motheread/Fatheread program coordinator, gave a short remark, emphasizing parental commitment and involvement is important for a child’s success in school.

Adult course session at this site was completed last Aug. 28, and was facilitated by Bryan Manabat, Motheread certified trainer.

Refreshments were served after the occasion.

CNMI Motheread/Fatheread program is a nationally recognized and highly acclaimed literacy development program designed to help parents use selected storybooks and a variety of inter-active activities to develop children’s reading, critical thinking and problem solving skills.

It is a literacy program sponsored by NMI Council for the Humanities in partnership with Joeten-Kiyu Public Library, the Public School System, and other generous donors.

The following are the Motheread/Fatheread adult course schedules:

• Sept. 28 — Dandan and Kagman Head Start Centers

• Sept. 29 — Garapan and Oleai Head Start Centers

• Sept. 30 — Tanapag and Tinian Head Start Centers

• Oct. 1 — Chalan Kanoa, San Antonio, Sinapalo, and Songsong Head Start Centers

Coconut festival to be held on Rota

ROTA (Office of the Mayor) — Starting on Sept. 11, the First CNMI Coconut Festival will kick off on the beautiful island of Rota.

The uses of Tronkon Niyok, or coconut tree, will be the main focal point.

Food and building materials will be displayed.

“We, here in the Marianas often times take for granted the many blessings in our midst and need only an occasion to remind us. Hence, the coconut tree festival in which I foresee to be the opportunity to showcase such an occasion. The coconut tree is life sustaining tree where one can readily harvest and extract all its goodness,” Mayor Joseph S. Inos said.

Judging and presentation of huts will be held on the same day including visits by students from the Public School System.

A coconut food competition will also be held during the night market between 6:30 to 10:30 p.m.

On Saturday, Sept. 12, the. arts and crafts competition starts at 10 a.m and this will be followed by the presentation of the awards.

Many visitors are expected to grace Rota, along with media personnel from Guam, Chamorro clubs, students who share in this cultural theme of preservation and many other cultural entities and organizations.

Rota looks forward to having spirited competitions in arts and crafts, cooking, and a host of coconut inspired fun games in which any visitor and tourist can participate.

Concert to honor Chamorro artist

THE United Recording Artist Association, whose mission is to perpetuate the local culture, heritage and language through music, will honor Chamorro recording artist Alexander Sablan for his contributions to the community, a media release stated.

Sablan, also known as “The Colonel,” will be honored as one of the Marianas’ pioneers in the music industry in a concert titled “Honoring Our Chamorro Recording Artist Pioneers.”

This event will also acknowledge the islands’ present and future local recording artists as well.

The event will take place on Oct. 25, at the Yigo Amusement Park from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Tinian PTA meeting

(THS) — This is to remind all parents/legal guardians and staff of Tinian High School students that the PTA meeting will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m., in the THS cafeteria. Agenda will include the election of officers.

Fuel surcharge rescinded

(Horizon Lines) — Horizon Lines has rescinded our announced increase of the fuel adjustment factor in the Guam/CNMI trade which was scheduled to take effect on Sunday, Sept. 27.

Horizon Lines’ fuel adjustment factor for the Guam/CNMI trade will remain at 29.5 percent.

This action has been filed with the surface transportation board and covers Horizon Lines tariffs 353, 344 and 961.

These tariffs govern shipments moving between the continental U.S. and Guam.

Green flag on Rota

(DEQ) — The Division of Environmental Quality has assigned the green flag on Rota’s recreational beaches and storm water drainages.

None of the samples collected contained excessive concentration of fecal indicator bacteria nor did they exceed the CNMI’s marine water quality standards.
