It felt great talking to a group of students knowing that they were attaining important and useful knowledge from me.”
Thus began Jalma Manglona’s journey to becoming a teacher.
With the assistance of a federal Pell Grant and a CNMI scholarship, Jalma is a full-time student at Guam Community College and plans to attend the University of Guam at the same time, so that she may graduate sooner with an associate of science degree and begin her teaching career in early childhood education.
She would like to become a preschool or kindergarten teacher on her home island of Rota, where she graduated from Rota High School.
While attending Guam Community College, Jalma is also an active volunteer for several community efforts, such as coastal cleanup, food and clothing drives; and AmeriCorps Sanctuary Incorporated events, which focus on mentoring, childcare, assisting groups with youth and adult anger management, tobacco cessation, and drug and alcohol abuse.
She applied for and was awarded an educational scholarship from Pacific Resources for Education and Learning at this year’s Pacific Educational Conference on Guam.
Each year, PREL awards scholarships to U.S.-affiliated Pacific island teachers or teachers candidates who are in the process of completing an accredited teacher preparation program.
Jalma says, “I want to pass on my passion for teaching to my future students. Only good can come from those who love to teach and love to learn.”
