Around the Islands: Tropical storm condition 3 on Rota

Tropical Depression 18W was moving to the southwest at around seven miles per hour. A gradual turn toward the west then west-northwest was expected during the next 12 to 24 hours.

Maximum sustained winds were 35 miles per hour and were expected to slowly intensify over the next 24 hours and could become a tropical storm during the next 24 hours.

Gov. Benigno R. Fitial  maintained tropical storm condition III for Rota as of 5:30 p.m.

Retirees meeting

THE first annual general membership meeting of the Commonwealth Retirement Association will be held today, Sept. 29, 6 p.m., at the Pedro P. Tenorio Multi-Purpose Center in Susupe.

The association is made up of all working and retired members of the original retirement program, now referred to as the Defined Benefit plan.

Election of board of directors will take place. All gubernatorial candidates are confirmed to be present to speak and answer questions.

Heinz-Arnold on Chamorro talk show

REPRESENTATIVE Heinz S. Hofschneider and Speaker Arnold I. Palacios will be the guests on the Chamorro talk show “Marianas Agupa” hosted by Glenn H. Manglona on Magic 100.3 FM.

The show starts at 10 a.m. this Saturday, Oct. 3.

Hofschneider and Palacios will discuss their platform as well as the social, economic, political and cultural issues facing the commonwealth today.

From 9:15 a.m. to 9:45 a.m., former Rep. Candido B. Taman, an Independent candidate for Saipan mayor, will also be a guest on the show.

Guam air show canceled

THE Andersen Air Force Base on Guam has canceled the Team Andersen Air Show ’09 due to Tropical Depression 18W that was tracking toward the island with forecast cyclone force heavy winds and rain on the night before and day of the air show.

There was also a second potential storm building further to the east that could affect Guam.

The Air Force is hoping to reschedule an air show in the near future, or at least an open house to the community for its continued outstanding support to the airmen and families of the 36th Wing and Andersen Air Force Base.

Ground water rule workshop

(DEQ) — The Mariana Islands Water Operator Association is hosting a workshop on Oct. 9, Friday, 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m., in the Napu Room of the Pacific Islands Club.

This is for public water system owners and operators. General admission is $10; for members, $8.

The purpose of this workshop is to explain how the new ground water rule, which takes effect on Dec. 1, will affect public water system.

Personnel from the Division of Environmental Quality will be presenting the information.

Certified water operators that attend this workshop will receive three hours of continuing education units.

The admission fee for this workshop covers the cost of the room rental and refreshments for this event.

Beautify CNMI meeting

(Beautify CNMI) — The monthly Beautify CNMI meeting will be this Thursday at DEQ, starting at 3:30 p.m.
