SUVA (Pacnews) — The Australian Confederation of Trade Unions says it is awaiting a response from the Fiji government before deciding whether to impose sanctions against Fiji-bound craft.
ACTU President Sharan Burrows said unionists in Australia feel they ought to increase pressure on the Fiji government after three months without any development in the struggle to unionize Airports Fiji Ltd. workers at Nadi International Airport.
She did not specify, though, the nature of sanctions nor when they will likely to impose any trade embargo.
“Since the beginning of the current phase of the dispute 16 months ago, nine major issues have arisen that have not been addressed, including the unfair dismissal of more than two dozen employees,” Burrows said.
However, Fiji Trades Union Congress General Secretary Felix Anthony said transport workers in Australia would stop servicing both marine and air craft bound for Fiji.
