Senate president, speaker invited to consular conference

THE CNMI government will hold the first ever consuls general conference to improve the working relationship of the Babauta-Benavente administration with foreign governments on various socio-economic concerns.

Gov. Juan N. Babauta in a May 28 letter, invited Senate President Paul A. Manglona, R-Saipan, and House Speaker Heinz S. Hofschneider, R-Saipan, to participate in the conference that will be held on June 1.

He said the attendance of the two heads of the Legislature will be vital to the conference.

Babauta said the heads of the consular offices from South Korea, the Federated States of Micronesia and the Marshall Islands have agreed to join their counterparts from the Philippines, Japan and Palau.

He said the goal of the meeting is “to enhance the working relationship between the respective foreign government heads based on Guam and here on Saipan and my administration.”

In other news, Sen. David M. Cing said he was not given “adequate notice” by Senate Floor Leader Joaquin G. Adriano on a meeting held last Tuesday with the Commonwealth Ports Authority about the recent developments related to the improvements of the Rota and Tinian harbors.

In a letter, Cing, D-Tinian, told Adriano, D-Tinian, that as member of the second senatorial district “(I) do not appreciate such failure to provide such…notice” and that he “should be properly informed of any future meetings that concern the citizens of Tinian…regardless of…(my) political affiliation….”

Adriano said he had no intention of not informing Cing about the meeting.

“I assumed that other delegation members were provided copies of the letter from CPA since it was stated there that (CPA Executive Director) Carlos H. Salas furnished the letter to delegation members,” he said.
