Bangladeshi community to celebrate ‘Victory Day’

Rakibul “Mintu” Islam, Bangladesh Cultural Group president, said their celebration will be held at the multi-purpose center in Susupe.

There will be cultural songs and dances from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Habib Ullah Badal, the group’s secretary, said members of the community are invited to join the celebration.

Victory Day marks the Bangladeshi people’s triumph in their nine-month war of liberation against Pakistan.

Formerly East Pakistan, Bangladesh seceded in 1971 to become an independent nation.

“We are happy for the continued support of the community,” Islam said.

Rabby Syed, United Workers Movement president, said the annual celebration honors the people’s courage.

Today’s celebration, he added, will also give recognition to the Bangladeshis who have made significant contributions to the community.

For their contributions to education, the following will  be honored: Masrur Alam, Mobtasim Alam, Fariha Omar, Moshin Omar, Poleen Ichihara and Mahadi Kader.

For cultural achievements: Rakibul Islam, Md. Habib Ullah, Farzana Syed, Roma Syed and Abu Daud.

For community service: Manzurul Alam, Abdul Aziz Pathan, Ripon Ahmed, Ferdous Habib-ullah, Altaf Hossain and Bimal Chandra Sutradhar.

For business: Sofiul Alam and Abdul Kader.

Special recognition awards will go to Eitman A. Choudhury, Sarim F. Omar, Soo Maitan Saba Ferdous, Tamanna Uddin, Fahim Shara Uddin and Farzana Kader .

For sports: Abdul Halim and Mafizul Islam.

For literature  and arts: Firoz Al Mamum and Tofa.

Md. Ansar Ali will receive the senior citizen award while Farid Ahmen will get recognition as a freedom fighter.
