Bank accounts for Philippine typhoon donations

The Department of Foreign Affairs on Sunday designated the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the Philippine National Red Cross and the National Disaster Coordinating Council as the main agencies that can receive donations.

“Interested individuals can directly deposit their donations into the accounts of those agencies,” Consul General Medardo Macaraig said.

Macaraig said their office is not allowed to receive any donations.

He is urging the Filipino community and CNMI residents to pray for the typhoon victims. (See story on page 14)

The United Filipino Organizations, on Monday, started its own fund drive.

As of 12:30 noon yesterday, UFO president Olive Yana said they had already listed $140 in pledges from different individuals.

She said their group is coordinating with the Philippine Consulate General in facilitating the donations from the CNMI.

Philippine Labor Attaché Joan Lourdes D. Lavilla and Welfare Officer Rey Tayag said the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration’s “Operation Libreng Tawag (Free Calls),”  is now fully operational.

This provides assistance to Filipino workers who want to communicate with their families affected by the typhoon.
